TEMPERANCE UNION.
ASHBURTON BRANCH MEETS, The Ashburton branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in the Baring Square Schoolroom yesterday afternoon, when the president (Miss Jackson) presided over a good attendance and conducted devotions. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs T. E. Taylor, Mrs Johnston, Mrs Long, Mrs McDonald, and Mrs McFarlane in their bereavements, and the relatives of the late Hon. L. M. Isitt. Mrs H. A. Lloyd (superintendent, for seamen’s work) was in charge of the meeting. Pastor M. Savage and Mrs L. P. Bryan were the speakers for the afternoon. Pastor Savage based his remarks on Christ’s call to the fishermen in Galilee. Mrs Bryan spoke on work among seamen in the Auckland district. A collection in aid of the Sailors’ Rest, Timaru, amounted to 17s 6d. A vote of thanks was accorded the speakers. Scarves, writing and toilet material were handed in for use at the Sailors’ Rest. Musical items were given by Mrs Gunn and Mrs Newland, and a recita tion by Miss Norma Wright. were made for a meeting to he held at the Tinwald Women’s Christian Temperance Union next Wednesday. After afternoon tea the gathering concluded with a hymn.
