QUEEN CARNIVAL

SHOWGROUNDS IMPROVEMENTS. FURTHER ARRANGEMENTS MADE The. proposed queen carnival and gymkhana of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association to raise funds for improvements to the Showgrounds was advanced a stage further last evening, when a meeting, over which the president of the Association (Mr R. J. Martin) presided, received reports of the decision of the executive and made further plans. The secretary (Mr W. H. Amos) reported that the following queens had been decided by the executive. West.—Miss Edna Lemon (Lauriston) Red. East.—Miss Winnie Andrew (Tinwald), Blue. The executive also recommended that general committees be appointed for each queen, that coloured tickets be printed and sold at a small sum, and that a drive for produce and stock be held, together with concerts and socials in all parts of the County. The recommendations of the executive were adopted. Various grain and produce merchants advised that they would be only too pleased to receive gifts of produce and sell them, giving the proceeds to the queens. Election of Committees. The following committees were elected for each queen, with power to add: East.—Messrs R. J. Martin, S. P. Taylor, A. P. Bruce, J. C. Guinness, D. J. Doak, W. K. Waters, A. Gregory C. Hale, R. Hefford, G. Chilton arid J. Gregory. West.—Messrs A. A, McDonald, A. P. Raven, M. Turton, T. W. Stringer, A. N. Grigg, J. Blair, C. Moller, W. Williamson, J. Lowery, G. M. Heasley, C. H. Amos, and W. Lemon. It was decided to issue red and blue tickets, which will be sold at sixpence each. All the stock and produce offered will be sold for the queen desired by the donor. Arrangements were made to invite firms, county agents, and fat stockbuyers to attend a meeting with a view to forming and assisting the stock and produce committee. It was decided to apply to the Minister of Internal Affairs for a share in an art union. The president said the association had a right of way leading to the main road from the Showgrounds. It was a pity to have the driveway there, planted with trees, and not used. The idea of opening the entrance was a good one, but the Association had never had sufficient funds. It might be a good idea to go ahead with opening the new gateway. It had always been intended to have ornamental gates facing the stteet. Opening of New Entrance. Mr M. Turton moved that a portion of the funds raised be used for opening the new gateway. Mr A. N. Grigg, seconding this, said he had always been in favour of opening up the new gateway. The motion was carried. Mr W. K. Waters said that some of the members of the outside bodies interested bad suggested that the Association reconsider its decision not to allocate any of the funds to any other bodies. He suggested that the association should receive the first £6OO, after which the other bodies would receive the equivalent of £lO. The association would receive any further money raised above this. The president said the committee had discussed this before and its decision was that it was making a straight-out A. and P. drive. It would be glad to have any other bodies assisting, but several other bodies had promised assistance freely without asking for reward. The secretary said he thought if the wholehearted'support of five bodies were obtained the £SO would be well spent. Mr Waters said there were some he knew would work without receiving any assistance whatever, but there was one body in particular would otherwise be an asset, but would not help without prospect of reward. Mr G. Chilton said the Pipe Band was ready to lend assistance without asking for any recompense. Its representative had not come with the objective of a money making proposition. Mr Grigg said he agreed with Mr Amos that the assistance of some bodies would be cheap at £lO. If there could be some limitation placed on the number of these bodies he would favour the suggestion. Mr A. P. Raven suggested that the matter be referred back to the executive to draw up some workable scheme. It was decided that this should be done.
