BRITAIN AND ITALY.
MR CHAMBERLAIN’S DEMAND REPORT CURRENT IN PARIS. {United Press Assbciaiion—Copyrights deceived This Day, 9.40 a.m.) PARIS, August 3. It is believed that Mr Chamberlain demands Italian evacuation of the Balearic Islands and Morocco, and cessation of propaganda among the Arabs, in return for recognition of the Abyssinian conquest. ENCOURAGEMENT OF HOPE. OFFICIAL VIEW IN LONDON. (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, August 3. The exchange of Tetters between Mr Chamberlain and Signor Mussolini is still the subject of much comment in the press. In British official circles the fact that the Italian Government freely accepts the view of the relations of Powers with interests of Mediterranean which Mr R. A. Eden expressed in his recent speech in the House of Commons and reciprocates Britain’s desire for a friendlier atmosphere, is welcomed as encouraging the hope , that the Anglo-Italian'declaration of January last will be permitted to have full effect in improving the relations between the two countries. Inevitably at the holiday season an event such as the exchange of personal letters between the heads of the British and Italian Government was required'to yield the maximum news value, and journalistic ingenuity was severely taxed for the purpose, so that the reports reaching London to-day, as well as the comments in the English newspapers themselves, show a line crop of rumours as to the implications of the Correspondence and the developments fo be expected from it. Inquiries in authoritative quarters indicate that these reports are unprofitably speculative and in some cases the shots fall very -wide of the mark.— British Official AVireless. ALLEGED PROPAGANDA. ITALIANS IN THE NEAR EAST. LONDON, August 2. While Signor Mussolini and Mr Neville Chamberlain are talking friendship, Italy is fostering anti-British propaganda in the Near East, states tho “Daily Herald.” Mussolini desires to revive the ancient Roman province of Syria as an independent Arab state under Italian tutelage, comprising Palestine, modern Syria, and Sinai. The Jews would b.e absorbed or eliminated.
