LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
' APPOINTMENTS PENDING. (Per Press Association.) AVELLINGTON, August 2. To bring the membership of the Legislative Council up to approximately its normal strength, additional appointments will he made in the near future. “Several appointments will be made to the Legislative Council before the opening of the forthcoming session of Parliament,” said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) to-night. “The Government’s object is to maintain the Council at its normal strength.” .With the death, a few days ago, of the Hon. L. M. Isitt, there are now 33 members in the Legislative Council. Although the number of members is not limited, it is the traditional practice to maintain the strength of the Council at about 40, representing half the strength of the House of Representatives. Immediately before June 10 last, the membership of the Council was 38. Five members—the leader of the Council (the Hon. M. Fagan), the Hon. R. Masters, the Hon. D. Buddo, the Hon. R. McCallum and the Hon. J. Trevithick —completed their terms of appointment on that day. The reappointment of Mr Fagan, however, left the strength of the Council at 34.
