TEN SECTIONS

ON THE COURTHOUSE SITE. OPENING RENTALS 45s A FOOT. COUNCIL SETS OUT CONDITIONS. KEEN COMPETITION ANTICIPATED It is expected that there will be keen competition for the ten sections which the Ashburton Borough Council has set out on the East Street area now occupied by the Courthouse, and which will shortly be available for building. Conditions under which the sections may be leased were gone into exhaustively by the Council last evening, and certain important minimum requirements were laid down. The term of leasing will be 21 years, with a right of renewal at the end of that period. The least frontage that may be taken is 16 feet, and the upset rentals have been fixed as follows: First seven years £2 5s per foot; second seven years £2 15s per foot; third seven years, £3 5s per foot. The frontages'and skylines muse bo uniform and conform to the wishes of the Council, and a verandah must be placed in front of the buildings, these, also/ to be uniform in height and design. No single storey building with a value of less than £1250 will be permitted, and if additional frontage is taken, the amount of the cost of tlxe building to be put up must meet with the approval of the Council. Tenders for the sections are to be called immediately and the conditions allow for the tenderers to indicate the frontage they require, as well as the type of building they propose to place on the section or sections applied for. Tenders will close On September 3. The block concerned has a frontage to East Street of 165 feet, while the frontage on Havelock is 132 feet. It was taken by the Council in exchange for a section of land near the Public Library (where the new courthouse is being built) and a sum of about £3OOO.
