BOXING.
TOURNAMENT AT RAKAIA. SOUTHLAND TEAM COMPETES. A team of boxers from Southland took part in a successful and entertaining tournament staged by the Rakaia Boxing Association in the Town Hall last evening. The public was treated to some last and exciting boxing. The principal officials were: Referees, Mr W. McPhail and Mr E. Pocock; judges, Messrs J. B. Cullen, A. O’Connell, B. Toner and W. Rains. The main bout of the evening was the welter-weight between R. Baker (Southland), 10.3, and D. McLeod (Christchurch) 10.5. McLeod proved a worthy opponent, and had Baker hard pressed at times, but Baker’s footwork kept him out of trouble. At the end of the third round Baker landed with a terrific right to the jaw, and McLeod took the count. Among the visitors to the tournament were Messrs S. Tall, P. Hughes and J. Vickery, of Invercargill, Mr M. A. Curtayne, of the Wellington Association, and Messrs A. Stacey and A. R. Harris, of Christchurch. Details of the bouts are: A. McCall (Ashburton, Bst 121 b, v-. A. Morris (Kaiapoi) Bst 5lb —Both boys exchanged blows in the centre of the ring, honours being in favour of Morris in the first round. Both boys again exchanged blows in the second, McCall having a slight advantage. McCall, using a hard left, had Morris in trouble in the third round. McCall won. B. O’Donoghue (Rakaia) 9st 121 b, v T. Dix (Ashburton), 9st 101b—The referee stopped the contest, awarding the decision to O’Donoghue on a technical knock-out in the first round. W. Dwyer (Christchurch) lOst 51b, v. J. Thwaites (Hororata) lOst 41b—Both sparred and paid each other a lot of respect in the first round. _ In the second Thwaites landed a right to the head, and Dwyer’s left played a tattoo on Thwaites’ head. The third was a good round. Thwaites won. W- Jaggers (Christchurch) 9st 31b, v. C. Garty (Christchurch) 9st 31b —Both boys indulged in sparring and holding, with very little action. The second round had a little more action but far too much clinching and there was hardly a clean blow. The last round opened briskly. Jaggers seemed to hold the upper hand and won the round and the decison. G. Brown (Christchurch) sst 121 b, v. W. Tonks (Ashburton), 6st 21b Both boys started at a great pace and ■threw punches in all directions. Neither boys payed attention to boxing. In the second round Tonks, boxing coolly, (landed good blows and steadied Brown. Tonks carried the fight to Brown and landed some good body blows and had Brown in trouble. Tonks won the last round easily, and the decision, a draw, was hard to follow. . F. Quinn (Christchurch) lOst 61b, V. F. Smith (Timaru) lOst olb Quinn landed straight lefts and a right cross. Smith swung in all directions. Quinn landed the better punches and won the decision. T. Denny (Southland) lOst 21b v. Wes Jack (Timaru) lOst 81b.—Denny took the first round and Jack the second. Denny took the third again, and in the fourth drove Jack with lefts and rights to the ropes. Denny did not let up and drove Jack all round the ring, taking the round and the decision. V. Thomas (Christchurch) 9st lllb v. V. Enright (Southland) 9st 13lb.—Both exchanged blows in the centre of the ring. Enright took tlie round. Thomas fought back, and had Enright in trouble with a right to the jaw in the second, and took the round. _ At the start of the third round Enright landed hard rights to the jaw and knocked Thomas out.
D. Daly (Christchurch) list 131 b v. T. Lister (Ashburton) list lllb. — Lister took the first two rounds, and in the third Lister landed lefts to
Daly’s body and rights to the head. Daly fought back. Lister again drove Daly to the ropes with lefts and rights to the head and body, to win the round and the decision. R. Baker (Southland) lOst 31b v. D. McLeod (Christchurch) lOst 3lb. —In the final round McLeod landed a left to the jaw and knocked Baker through tlie ropes. McLeod carried the fight and made Baker give ground. McLeod was not able to continue after taking a count of fiyq, the decision going to Baker on a technical knock-out. S. Guthrie (Ashburton) 9st 6lb v. J. Lambert (Southland) 9st. — Gqthrio drove Lambert to the ropes with lefts and rights to the head, and took the round. Guthrie landed hard rights just at the gong and took the second round, also winning the third. Guthrie landed a left to the jaw. Lambert backed away, and coming in fast landed a left to Guthrie’s jaw. Guthrie drove Lambert to the ropes with lefts and rights to the body. In the next round Lambert opened with two lefts to Guthrie’s jaw. Guthrie drove Lambert to the ropes and landed lefts and rights to the body in the final round. Guthrie had Lambert in trouble just before the round finished. Guthrie won on points.
