AMERICA’S CUP

RANGER WINS SECOND EVENT, DECISIVE VICTORY ACHIEVED. ONE OF BEST ON RECORD. (United Press Association-—Copyright.* (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 2. Mr :H. S. Vanderbilt’s Ranger won the second race in the contest for the America’s Cup against Mr T. O. M. Sopwith’s Endeavour 11, the challenger. The contest consists of seven races, the winner of four being the victor. Dfespite crossing the starting line ahead and maintaining 700 yards lead for the first hour in a seven-mile south-by-west breeze, the Endeavour rapidly began to fall behind Ranger. The American boat caught up with the Endeavour before the end of the first leg and was 1.7 miles ahead at the 10-mile mark, 2.25 miles when the home run started, and approximately 2.6 when the race finished. The British boat was sailing smartly in a stiffening 12-mile wind at the end, and in a longer race she might have made a better showing, but as it was she suffered one of the most serious defeats in the history of the cup. Mr Sopwith has requested one day of rest under the rules. The next contest, therefore, will be held on Wednesday. The race to-day was for the most, part sailed in a heavy mist.
