UNDER ARREST.
FAMOUS AMERICAN AIRMAN. ADVENTURE IN RUSSIA. MOSCOW, July 21. Mr Clyde Pangborn, American flier, is reported to be under arrest at Velikiye Luki, near the Latvian border. It is alleged that lie attempted to enter Russia, without a passport visa. He was on a flight from Stockholm to Moscow, accompanied by Mr William Sirovich, of New York, a member of Congress. It is said that Mr Pangborn left Stockholm at the last minute and was unable to obtain a visa. He thought he could get one across the border. Soviet officials gave him 24 hours to obtain a visa, or face deportation. Meantime, Mr Sirovich had gone on to Moscow to try to arrange matters for Mr Pangborn there. The airman was completing arrangements for his long-deferred flight :around the world, which was originally announced for June last year. Ho flew the Pacific with Hugh Herndon in 1931, after having been arrested in Japan for having landed without a permit. With Roseoe Turner, he came second in the Melbourne Centenary Air Race from England.
