CONTRACTS FOR ASHBURTON. TWO LOCAL TENDERS ACCEPTED. TWELVE DWELLING'S INVOLVED. Tenders for tlie 12 houses which are to be erected in Ashburton under the Government’s housing scheme have been accepted. The tenderers are Messrs Smith Brothers, Ltd.,, of Ashburton, and Mr W. Bennett, of Ashburton. The tender of Messrs Smith Brothers is for 10 houses, and that of Mr Bennett for two houses. The prices of the houses have not yet been announced. This group of 12 houses includes 1C single units and one double unit, and will form the first quota of the scheme for Ashburton. They will be built on sections on a block at the corner of William and Princes Streets, where the Government has acquired 23 building areas.

The double-unit house is included in the contract which has gone to Messrs Smith Brothers, and it is understood that the two houses to be built by Mr Bennett will be of brick.

Till the contracts have been signed it cannot be stated when a start will be made with the work, but the date should not be far distant. Several houses will be building at the same time.
