ARMY AS CAREER.
BRITAIN LACKING OFFICERS HEAVY WEIGHT OF EXPENSE LONDON, July 15. How to make the Army attractive as a career to youth was discussed at a meeting of the Public Schools Careers Association, held at the invitation of the Army Council. Lack of officers is causing considerable concern —no less than the lack of men. It is estimated that Britain is 1000 officers short. Major-General A. C. Temperley, military correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph,” states that stagnation in promotion no doubt has a depressing effect. He axlds } however, that there are various other causes.
“The question of expense and the standard of living undoubtedly weigh heavily with parents,” he points out. “It can be approached either by increasing the pay, or reducing the standard expected of officers.”
