HOCKEY.
WOMEN’S MATCHES. GAMES ON SATURDAY. Trial matches in the senior grade of the Ashburton Women’s Hockey Association's teams were played on Saturday. The first and second teams drew, with three goals each, and the third team defeated the fourth team by three goals to nil. Mr E. M\ Gabites was referee. The A’ team will go to Timaru next Saturday to play the Timaru team, and the B and O teams will play a tr ial match at Ashburton. MEN’S MATCHES. The competitions of the Ashburton continued on Saturday, the results being:— Senior Grade Wakanuj defeated Ashburton by seven goals to one. For the winning team H. Wilson shot five and Bellamy and Stewart one each. L. Lees scored for Ashburton. Messrs Collins and Hopkins were the referees. Junior Grade—Ashburton B defeated Ashburton A by one goal to nil, the scorer being Read. Mr A. O. Vincent was referee. AUCKLAND RETAINS SHIELD. DRAW WITH WELLINGTON. AUCKLAND, August 1. In excellent weather, but on a tricky ground, Auckland retained the New Zealand Hockey Challenge Shield against Wellington after a solid display. Each side scored one goal. NEW ZEALANDERS WIN. FOUR TO NIL AGAINST WARWICK BRISBANE, August 1. The New Zealand hockey team beat Warwick yesterday by 4 goals to 0. The ground was hard and dusty. The scbre at half-time was 2-0. The scorers for New Zealand were Roughton (2), Monteith and fir own. Clark, the full-back, Burt, Robertson and Watson (halves), and Roughifcon and Monteith (forwards) were prominent. Monteith’s injured foot is now satisfactory. The New Zealand team will travel 300 miles for the next match, against Tamworth.
