ARMAMENTS RACE
THE SIZE OF BATTLESHIPS.
HISTORICAL MISTAKE REPEATED
AN ADMIRAL’S PROPHECY.
(United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 31.
The size of battleships was discussed by Sir Herbert Richmond at the Liberal summer school at Cambridge. He referred to the tendency on the part of nations which were arming beyond their financial limits to try to make up their want of numbers by an increase in the size of ships. Throughout history this had invariably resulted in another Power building similar or bigger battleships in reply. He expressed surprise that nations with military ability, knowledge and experience should . repeat the mistake, and prophesied that other nations, including Britain, would, be constrained to follow the examples in order to preserve their position.— British Official Wireless.
