LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian,” July 31, 1887) Horses for India.—The "Riverton Star 1 ’ says that Mr Edward Saunders, on behalf of Mr J. Grigg, Longbeach, has been buying horses in that district during the last week for the Indian market. About 50 of the best light animals have been secured, and go on by train next .Tuesday, to be shipped by steamer to Calcutta. Proceedings at Church Entertainment.—The enjoyment of the entertainment on Thursday night in St. Stephen’s Schoolroom was very much spoilt owing to the conduct of a number of young men and young women, who did their best, in a quiet way, to mar toe proceedings. It is much to he regretted that Ashburton should contain young men so utterly without thet instinct of self respect, and young women so devoid of that intuitive refinement which is supposed to belong to their sex. The problem is now to give them an inkling of what is meant by the term gentleman and gentlewoman, Tlie names of the ringleaders are known, and means will be adopted to avoid any recurrence of such behaviour which might he termed childish if it were not a great deal worse. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (rom the July 1 31 r 1912). Tinwald Domain.—A meeting of the Tinwald Domain Board was held on Saturday, when there, were present: Messrs J. Heseltine, J. Hampton, A. Millichamp and T. E. Tarbotton. The caretaker reported that the work of cutting the fences was in hand and that horses had been round grazing in the Domain. The secretary was instructed to write to the owners of the horses informing them that unless the horses were kept off tne Domain they wo'uld be impounded. It was left in the hands of Mr Tarbotton to take steps to have the water races cleaned. The sale of a number of trees was also left in the hands of Mr Tarbotton.

New Football Club.—The newly-form-ed football club at Hinds had arranged a match with Lismore on Saturday last, but owing to the rough weather the Lismore team did not arrive until after 4 p.m., when most of the local team had left, and the match was postponed.. Personal.—Mr John Grigg, of Longbeach, will judge the nolstein cattle at the Carterton Show. Mr C. \\. Nicoll left Ashburton, en route for England, on Tuesday evening. The Rev. E. Whiteliouse left Ashburton on Tuesday for Auckland.
