HIGHEST OF TOUR
NEW ZEALAND SCORES 495 RUNS SURREY DISMISSED MODERATELY MOLONEY’S HECTIC PERIOD. (From the special correspondent of the United Press Association with the team). (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, July 29. „On the second day of the match against Surrey, New Zealand continued its first innings in fine weather and on a good wicket, till the tenthwicket partnership had added 52, when Page was caught at cover. He hi seven fours. After making the highest total of the tour, New Zealand achieved an unexpected but meritorious success in the field, dismissing a reputedly strong batting side for a moderate total on a perfect wicket, with the attack impoverished by the absence of Cowie and Dunning. The former retired with stomach trouble after taking "O cheap wickets, and the latter had leg soreness. Hadlee and Weir were the only bowlers above slow pace. Only Sandham among the early batsmen was comfortable. He stayed nearly three hours. t , Moloney enjoyed a hectic period or deadly effectiveness, taking three wickets for no runs in two overs. Surrey had eight down for 147. Watts and Gover the two bowlers, hitting vigorously/added 124 with great pace. Watts gave a fine display lasting a little over an hour. He hit nine fours. Gover hit six fours. . Gallichan had a field day in the slips, taking three good catches. Moloney’s success again illustrated how invaluable a leg spin-bowler is in England. In view of the depleted attack, tne New Zealanders were unwilling to attempt the task of dismissing the county a second time, and a follow-on was not enforced. New Zealand batted three-quarters of an hour. ... . There was surprising interest in the match for an off-day, the attendance being about 7000. Scores: — NEW ZEALAND. First Innings.
