SIX MONTHS’ HARD.
A FORGED CERTIFICATE. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 29. When Albert Fergus Stanley Hickey appeared before Mr Justice Reed today for sentence on a charge oi attempted uttering of a forged document, namely, a certificate to the effect that lie had completed certain medical studies and had qualified for certain medical degrees, the Judge mentioned it appeared that while employed in an insurance office in Australia, before coming to New Zealand, accused embezzled £6OOO. Counsel said that £3500 had been repaid in hard cash, and assets transferred by him had been accepted in full settlement- of the balance. Mr Justice Reed reminded prisoner that when the Health Department made inquiries from him there was an opportunity to drop the title doctor, but instead he embarked on a campaign of lying, and subsequently went out of his way to Urge a statement purporting to be from the Registrar of the Melbourne University. The Judge said he did not propose to impose a heavy penalty because “1 can recognise that probably your life work is ruined to a certain extent.” He imposed a sentence of six months’ hard labour.
