THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS
AUGUST 19 SUGGESTED DATE The General committee of the Ashburton Boxing Association met last evening, the president (Mr H. D. Johnston) presiding. Correspondence was received from the New Zealand Boxing Association advising that the New Zealand amateur boxing championships would be held at Greymouth on September 9, 10 and 11, and requesting that nominations of boxers, judges, officials and the names of delegates be forwarded to Wellington by August 16.
It was decided to hold the Mid-Can-terbury championships on August 19, if the Majestic Theatre were available.
The balance-sheet of the last tournament disclosed a loss.
The application of Mr H. Freeman to hold a tournament at the vide club rooms as a benefit for Les Adams on July 31 was granted, the committee agreeing to assist in every possible manner. •
MATCH FOR SCHMELING.

The New York correspondent of the United Press Association states that Max Schmeling will be matched with the winner of the contest between Joe Louis and Tommy Farr at Philadelphia in October.
ARMSTRONG KNOCKS OUT BASS.
PHILADELPHIA, July 27
Henry Armstrong knocked out Benny Bass in the fourth round of a 10-round feather-weight bout.
GALENTO BEATS AL ETTORE.
NUTLET 7 (New Jersey), July 28
Tony Galento heat A 1 Ettore by a technical knock-out in the eighth round of a 12-round heavy-weight bout. Tommy Fair was a spectator.
