LOOKING BACK.

(From the “Guardian,” July 29, 1887.)
The A. and P. Association.—At the annual meeting of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association the following officers were elected:—President, Mr C. J. Harper; vice-presidents, Messrs T. Bullock, G. Jameson, A. Harrison, D. Williamson and J. Bohifant; committee, Messrs E. S. Coster, R. Friedlander, P. Williams, C. T. Dudley, T. E. Upten, J. Jamieson, P. Walker, A. J. Houston, C. Reid, J. Tucker, J. Gilmour, J. Small, J. Heseltine, R. Clark, O. Digby, D. Cameron, J. C. N. Grigg, J. Hunter, W. Lyttleton, G. Murdoch, It. Miller, F. T. Mavo, W. J. Silcock, M. Stitt, W. C. Walker, D. Oliver, C. G. Haydon, L. White and C. B. Dowling. The annual report stated that the committee regretted that although the association was holding its own it had made no material progress in its working among the farmers in the district.
Coursing Meeting.—Tho meeting at Lagmhor yesterday under the auspices of the Ashburton Coursing Club attracted a goodly number of leash. Most of the courses resulted in good sport and pretty close finishes, to use a sporting phrase, and in only one—that between Firefly and Highland Lad in the Puppy Stakes —did the decision of the judge (Mr Duncan) give dissatisfaction.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” July 29, 1912.) High School Reunion.—The Ashburton High School Old Pupils’ Association held its third annual reunion in the school assembly hall on Thursday, and despite the boisterous weather the function, which took the form of a social and dance, was most successful. Close upon 80 ladies and gentlemen attended, and were received by the president of the association (Mr J. B. Christian). Among those present were the chairman of the Board of Governors (Mr J. Tucker) and Mrs Tucker, the headmaster (Mr W. F. Watters) and Mrs Watters, and members of the teaching staff. The social intercourse for which the first part of the evening was principally set apart was pleasantly enlivened by songs from Miss B. Claridge and Messrs W. Anderson, H. S. Gardner and J. Trevor Thomas, all of whom had to respond to encores.
Visit to Fiji.—Messrs Thomas Blackley, Thomas Langley, Cecil May and George Hardy returned to Rakaia on Thursday after a lengthened, and what they describe as & most enjoyable, trip to the Fiji Islands. They were quite taken with the beauty and wonders of the land of reef and palm.
