YUGOSLAV TENSION

DEFENCE OF ORTHODOX CHURCH CIRCULATION OF INCITEMENTS. FURTHER EXCOMMUNICATIONS.

( United Press Association —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) BELGRADE, July 27. Tension underlies the city’s deep mourning for Patriarch Varnava, past whose bier mourners filed all day. The city police, to whom the populace is less hostile, replaced gendarmerie near the cathedral, but the gendarmerie, truculently swinging their truncheons, is in full force in the fashionable promenade of Saint Michael. Thousands of leaflets have been circulated, adjuring members of the Orthodox Church against the Pope as they defended it against the Kaiser and against the Sultan. The funeral on Thursday is expected to yield scenes comparable with those at King Alexander’s funeral. The Government discountenances the Synod retorted by suspending the religious rights of 100 members of Parliament who are supporters of the Concordat, and by convening a Church tribunal to adjudicate regarding the excommunications .
