THE WEATHER.

FINE, WITH COOL SOUTH WIND.

The weather in Ashburton to-day was again fine, and in the morning conditions were particularly warm, giving an early foretaste of spring weather. A cool south wind arose in the afternoon, however, making conditions less pleasant, and blew with moderate force. The sky remained cloudless, with bright sunshine. Only .3 of a. degree of frost was recorded at the Domain weather station this morning. The maximum temperature yesterday was 48.2 degrees, and the inside minimum last night 35.8 degrees. A sharp drop in barometric pressure was shown at 9 o’clock this morning, the reading being 29.25 inches, compared with 29.67 inches yesterday morning.

WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the. weather:—General inference: An anti-cyclone extends from Australia across the north Tasman Sea to northern New Zealand, where the pressure has risen considerably. A rather deep secondary depression v r as, however, crossing the southern portion of the South Island early this morning, and it is probable that other secondaries will follow it. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oajnaru is as follows:

Moderate to strong south-westerly winds prevailing, and reaching gale force in some exposed positions. Weather for the most part fine, but occasional scattered showers probable. Temperatures cold, with some sharp frosts.
