MRS J. M. WILKIE.
The death/ occurred on Sunday of Mrs Louisa Ella Wilkie, wife of Mr J. M. Wilkie, of East Street Ashburton. Mrs Wilkie was born in Christchurch, and came to Ashburton in, 1912. Mrs Wilkie was a. keen croquet player and was one of those responsible for the formation of the Waireka Croquet Club, of which she was president since its inception. The club has flourished considerably during her period of office. Before assisting to found the Waireka. Club, Mrs Wilkie played for the Allenton Club. In the Ashburton Cavendish Club, Mrs Wilkie, who was one of its early members, was particularly interested in the home economics circle, of which she was a valuable member. At one time she was convener of tlie arts circle. Beyond this she did not take a great deal of activity in public affairs, being fond of home life.
Mrs Wilkie leaves two sons, Messrs B. Wilkie (Otago University) and I. Wilkie (Ashburton). Tlie funeral took place at the Ashburton Cemetery this afternoon, the service being conducted by the Venerable Archdeacon A. J. Petrie. MR GEORGE HARDIE, M.P. (Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.) , LONDON, July 26. Mr George Hardie, Labour M.P. for the Springburn Division of Glasgow, is dead.
Mr Hardie, who was a son of the late Mr Keir Hardie, the famous Labour leader, wasjin engineer by trade. Ho Springburn from 1922 to 1931, and from 1935 till now.
