MONTHLY MEETING OF ASHBURTON BRANCH.

TJio monthly meeting of tho Ladies' Rod Cross Committee wiis held on Saturday atternoo:i, when Mrs Galbraith presided over a largo attendance of members.

Mrs Galbraitli referred feelingly to the largo number of Ashburton boys who had fallen in. tho service of their Country during tho last few weeks, f and moved tho following motion:—"That this meeting desires to express its deep regret- at tho toss through death of so many bravo men, and to extend its sincere'sympathy to Mrs Childs, Mrs Readhead, and tho relatives of all the other boys who have fallen." This was carried by the members standing in silence. , The secretary reported that arrangements had been made for a concert in aid of Red Cross Funds, to be given by a Christchurch Juvenile Concert Party on October 24; also, that tho Theatre Royal had been promised free of chargo by tho manager, of Hayward'.s Picture Company. Appreciation was'expressed of 'tb«> generous offer, and it \va< moved that tho manager be written to and thanked for his help. H was reported that tho Amalgamated Socioty of Carpenters and Joiners had written offering the services of mombors for making cases, and that they had already started work, which was a great help to the society. The secretary was. requested to write conveying tho thanks of the committee. A letter was road from* Nurso Stevonson, who loft Ashburton for Walton-on-Thames Hospital some months ago. It was resolved that the "Guardian -■ be asked to publish the letter, winch Avoiild bo of interest to many in the County. 7n connection with "Our Day Fund, Mrs Watson reported that she had written to all the country branches asking their help, and had already "received donations from some, and promises of help, from all. After an animated discussion on the great need for a- combined effort m order to raise. a substantial . amount, Miss McKee moved that all the churches be asked'to take the matter: up heartily, and each run-,a"tent vfor 'tho salo of' produce; home delicacies, ■ and anything saleable, and that ;#the country friends should also bo asked to help the tent of their own .denomination. • : '"■.,•.- The matter was taken up enthusiast!- ( cally by all present, and the motion was' carried unanimously.
