The spring meeting of the Australian Jockey Club was. commenced to-day. The weather was fine, though the course was heavy, and there was a large attendance. In the Derby, Kii■boy, who. was favourite, ran last in the early stages, but joined the leaders half a mile- from home. Thereafter he was untroubled, McLachlan taking no chances. In the Spring Stakes the favourite, Sasanof, was well placed ithroughout, and scored by a narrow margin from another New Zealander, Bee. The following are the.details of the racing: —

Hurdle Handicap.—Jack Itice 1, Kooya 2, Sweet Step 3. Won by eight ■lengths. Time,' 4min. ■ Trial Stakes. —Quinologist 1, Two Blues 2, Court Jester 3. Won by half a length. Time, 2min 10.?scc.
