A MAORI GIFT.
1 ' WELLINGTON, October 3. The Taupo Maoris have decided to make a generous gift for the benefit of soldiers of their race. At a conference at Tokaanu, Lake Taupo, between Dr. Pomaro, representative of tho Native race on the" Executive, and the chiefs and members of tho Tuwharetoa tribe, it was decided by To Heuheu Tukino and Kingi and members of the tribe.to. mnk& an absolute gift to returned Maori soldiers for settlement purposes of parts of the Owhaoko block of 2.s,3oo*acres, situated between Lake Taupo and Taihape. The Government has at various times purchased areas of this block, for tree planting, but with " increasing knowledge of the methods of utilising-'this class of country there is a. prospect of securing good settlement upon it.
