ABSENCE OF -EARLIER
CONFIDENCE
(Received Qetobcr 3, 9.5 a.m.)
NEW YORK, October 2
I klorr Baltin (Managing Director oi' {ho Hamburg-Amorika Shipping Company) writes to the Gormau papers that ho and other shipowners an? anxious i'or an early peace. The Jctter ilocs not show any of the- confidence which marked German statements earlier in the war.
■Bailin says:—"l always thought the ■ world big enough for ourselves and England and other Powers. ] still believo this insane war might have been avoided had tho English statesmen acted wisely. Tho rumour that I ani suggesting yielding and from victory is without foundation. Even though our losses may never be restored, no German shipowner is so mean that lie is unwilling to make -further sacrifices for-^the Fatherland."
