HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of tho Ashburton High School Board was held this morning. Present: Messrs Joshua Tucker (chairman}, \V. H. Collins, W. R. Denshire, R. Galbraith, J. B. Christian, C Reid., A. Drummond, W. T. Lill, Rev. 0. Miller, and M.r W. F. Watters (headmaster). The chairman reported a debit balance at the bank of £6000, and a credit iv the general account/of £187 5s lOd.

A number of formal communications were received and dealt with..

The-headmaster, Mr W. F. Wattors, reported that life school reopened on> Tuesday. Sei)toinbei- 12. Tho number on the "roll was 107, 63 boys and 4^ girls, four boys (all. required at-home for farm work) Having loft. Tho average attendance since reopening had been 98.97, or 91 per cent, of the roll number. Every effort to obtain a temporary teacher in Miss •. Horton s place had so far b«en unsuccessful. He recommended that applications bo ■invited for the permanent .position in November, when -a. number of wellqualiiiod teachers would probably be available. He -had • received" inquiries from a number of agricultural instructors desiring-to apply for the position of agricultural science ' master, and would suggest that tho board confer with Mr Brown, who would shortly be visiting' Ashburton/on the matter of the appointiiient: He would be glad'ir the board would consider tho question of the provision of a long-promised tennis court for tho boys, also the obtaining of coeoauut malting for .the concrete crickot pitch .and for-the springboard of the swimming bath.— Tho report was received and tho recommendations adopted. Tho. chairman and Messrs Lill and Reid wore instruct-ed-to. confer with Mr Brown of the Fields Division, Agricultural Department) regarding' the appointment of a science master ■ arid payment ox the appointee's salary.
