LONDON, Stpt; 28 ' Tho German newspapers, evidently inspired, excuse tho Somme defeat b^ saying that the Allied artillery raised such a cloud of dust before tho Germaßi trenches that it was impossible to ascertain where tho attacks were to be made. Thus the German artillery wse unabio to barrage the assault.
