ECONOMY IN FOODSTUFFS.
BOARD OF TRADE'S RECOMMENDATIONS.
ONE MEATLESS DAY EACH WEEK
(Received September 30, 2,5 p.m.)
•- LONDON, September 29. An interim report by the Boai'd of Trade Committee on tHe Increased Prices of Commodities roeommends the need of hastening the construction of mercantile shipping as far as is compatible with naval needs, and the provision of sufficient men, docks, and railways to prevent tho renewal of congestion. Thorc should be a larger restriction on the exports of lessnecessary commodities. The Government's policy of large-scale purchases of meat had proved a success, and the Government should develop as far as possible the sources of supply whence it could make direct purchases. The committee urges all those not engaged in severe manual labour, and who at present eat meat daily, to abstain one day in each week, believing that a largo number of people only want clear and authoritative guidance to press this self-denial asa public dxity. Local authorities should bo empowered to open municipal shops for the sale o* i milk, moat, bacon, and necessary foodstuffs where there was reason to believe that any group of retailers was using tho. present abnormal situation to obtain excessive profits.
