WELCOME AT ASHBURTON.
The railway station was crowded last ovoning when the special train conveying wounded men from the Willochra, passed through Ashburton. Tho Mayor, Mr It. Galbraith, extended to tho men a hearty welcome- and the best wishes of the citizens. The soldiers appeared to be in the best of spirits, and a number favoured the bystanderr. with a. rousing chorus. As Lieutenant P. Stephens, an old Ashburtonian, parted from them, ho was heartily cheered, and a verso of " Auld Lang Syne" was sung. Lieutenant Stephons received an enthusi-
astic welcome from a host of friends. The train remaiiied in the station about ■}■? "tinntw. and during that time the soldiers mixed freely with the crowd ■:>a uio■ platform.
