An inqiu\st was held thia morning, before, tin; District Coroner, Mr V.. G. Day, S.M., concerning .the death of William Brooking (aged 69) on September 14. i ■

James Sutherland, baker, of Ash— burton, stated that ho was on the front seat of a drag coming from tbe races on September 14. When' the ' drag pulled up opposito the Com'mer-•• cial Hotel, witness, in alighting, saw tho deceased fall off the lowest step at the rear on to the back of his hea<3. Others picked the deceased up. The ■ drag'was not in motion when tho deceased fell. • \

Dr. Itcudlo deposed that on September 14 lio saw tho deceased after the accident. "Deceased did not recover consciousness,' and died on .September 22. On the latter date witness made .. a, postmortem examination of the body of !the, deceased. The,cause of death was effusion of .blood on the brain. . . .
