. ' Fifteen hundred enemy dead " were counted in tho streets of Combles, a.nd hundreds of wounded wore extricated from the cellars of houses.

The Germans left two "battalions'in fortified houses, with orders to hold out to the last. The British, in order to avoid losses, .carried out a big fresh bombardment, and the enemy could not continue the struggle.
