The Ashburton Motor, Cycle Club hold its first run of the- .season this afternoon, but owing to .tho unpromising aspect of tho weather and the somewhat greasy state of the roads, only five cycles with side-curs and two without started at..the'appointed hour. Tho trip" was to the mouth of tlie Ashburton .River.
The mission services in connection with the opening of the new Church of Christ commenced on Sunday last. At tho opening service a crowded congregation assembled, and followed with close interest a powerful sermon by the missioner, Mr It. Gebbie. The subsequent services have all been well attended, and the various discourses have elicited keen attention.
At last night's meeting of the Executive Committee for the Ashburton Relief Fund a letter was received from the Clerk of the County Council, in reply to an application for the £250 recently granted the committeo by the council. The letter stated that the council did not consider that its contribution was roquired at the present time. Considerable surprise was expressed by the meeting at the council's attitude, and the chairman and secretary were instructed to wait upon the chairman of tho council with regard to the matter.
At the Baring Square Literary and Debating Society on Monday last the Rev. G. Frost, delivered an interesting lecture, entitled "An Evening with Addison," in which the lecturor dealt with this talented writer's life story and enlarged upon his literary genius. Extracts from Addison's works were road and discussed, and many of tho audience's to whom Addison had been perhaps somewhat unfamiliar awoke to a. keen appreciation of him. A vote of thanks to Mr Frost brought an instructive' evening to a. close. Mr J. Watson occupied the chair.
