LAST NIGHT'S NEWS.

THE WESTERN THEATRE.

ADVANCE RENEWED

ONE MILE FORWARD ON SIX-

MILE FRONT.

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Service.) LONDON, September 26. Sir Douglas Haig reports:— Wo were to-day every where successful in storming positions on a six-mile front between Combles and Martinpuich to a depth of more than a mile. We captured the strongly-fortified villages of Morval and Lesbceufs, practically severing the enemy's communications with Combles. The enemy's losses were heavy. Morval staads on the hoights northward of Combles, and with its subterranean quarries, trenches, and wire entanglements constituted a formidable fortress. Tho possession of Morval and Lesboeufs is of considerable military importance. Many prisoners, machine guns^ and other material were taken. Our losses in relation to results were comparatively small. ■ Six enemy aeroplanes were destroyed on Sunday and three brought down damaged. Three of ours are missing.
