Mr W. -"icClurg, Ashburton, received a cable through the Defence authorities to-day stating .that his son, Lieut. D. W. ' McClurg had been wounded while fighting in France.
A London cable, message announces that Colonel tho Earl of Feversham has been killed in action. He was 37 years of ,age, and was the grandson of the present earl, whose -heir he was.-
' Sergeant Robert Simmers, of tho Rifle Brigade, who is mentioned as having received tho Military Medal, is a. sou of Mr G. A. Simmerß, formerly headmaster of the High Schools of Ashburton mid Tiraaru. Tho sergeant enlisted at Dannevirke, where ho was employed in survey work. He mentions In a letter dated July 29, that ho took a. patrol out one night to rescue a wounded man. The patrol wero hotly attacked, but five of them stuck it out for three;-.hours/; -, finally; supports and stretcher-bearers arrived and tho wounded man was rescued.
A London cable message announces that the Hon. Bernard Wiso died of heart failure while talking to his wife on Wednesday. He had just returned from a two days' visit- to the Australian canips, and was apparently in his usual health. The late Mr Wise (AgentGeneral for New South Wales), was born in Sydney in 1858, and was educated at itugby and Oxford, where he had a distinguished scholastic career. He was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple in 1883, and was AttorneyGeneral for New South "Wales 1887-88 and 1899-1904.
