GERM AN SHORTAGE OF GUNS
AND MUNITIONS
(Received September 21, 11.20 a.m.)
LONDON, September 20.
Sir Douglas Haig reports:—
We found on a prisoner a document, signed by General yon Falkenhayn while Chief of the General Staff, dated August 24. It states:—" The wastage of our guns during the lastfew months [has been considerably in excess of the [rate of production. This is equally true of our reserves of ammunition, of Iwhich there has been a serious diminution. It.is the duty of all ranks, not only of the artillery, to endeavour to remedy this serious state of things. We must seriously endeavour to preserve material, otherwise it will be impossible to make- good our losses and place new formations in the field."
