FIHST-LINE. POSITIONS WON
ROME, September 19. The' Italian offensive on, the Isonzic is proceeding steadily. During the first phase of tho fight— from September 13 to September 16— 'the Austrians lost-two-thirds of their front line. The bloodiest encounters took place on the second and third dajs, when r the enemy's reservos arrived. ■ The sth Austrian Army* Corps, which is encountering the Italian right flank, sustained enormous losses. General Cadorna postponed his offensive for eight days, owing to the heaTy rains. The bombardment was so tremendous that the Austrian trenches .were reduced to mounds of pulverised ruins, in which were mingled arms andjegs;. The attackers frequently found \ the Austrian trenches full of big iinex]>Wlci G shells. Tho Austrian 15-inch enns nrn nmv i frantically endeavouring to destroy
CJorizia and Monfnlcone, but the Italian heavy, batteries aro demoralising them. There are vast caverns in the heights behind Gorizia and Trieste, where the Austrian 15-inch gnus aro sheltered.
