FIRE
THRESHING COMBINE DESTROYED.
At 2.15 this afternoon the members of the Ashburton ..Fire Brigade wero summoned to an outbreak of fire in Mr William Meacleni's threshing combine, which, was standing in a yard at his premises, Besioh Road. When • the brigade arrived it was discovered that the fire, which was fanned by a strong breeze, had a good hold. The contents of two fire-extinguishers wero poured into the machine; ¥but proved unavailing. As no. water was available,;.; it was impossible to nave the combine from destruction. Eventually the brigade brought a long stretch of hose from the main on the Belt, and finally extinguished the outbreak.
How the fire, originated is a mystery. Last Friday morning two travelling whares, which had be-on, linked up with, the combine in the yard, wero totally destroyed by fire, only the, wheels and the framework being left. The. combine on that occasion* waa only sared after vigorous work on' the. part of*a bucket brigade. Xoithor too mil] nor the whares .were insured. : , •.
