r Major Charles Eric Andrews, formerly connected with the Defence Office in this district,'"and Lieutenant Percy A. S. • Stephens, who was well known in Ashburton, ure amongst those who will bo returning by the Willochra on Wednesday next.

Dr. A. A. Martin, of Palnjerston North, whose death is reported to hare taken place from wounds sustained in France, was one of the , best-known surgeons in New Zealand. When tlie war broke out Dr. Martin was on a visit to the Old Country,' and immediately offered his services: to tba Im^ perial authorities, and was accepted., Dr. Martin spent a year in.. France during the initial stages of the war. He then returned to Palmerston North to recuperate his health, and at the same time published his interesting book "A Surgeon in Khaki." He also delivered several interesting lectures on his experiences, and was successful in raising a substantial sum towards patriotic funds. After about six months he again returned to the front. Prior to the war he had built up a very extensive- practice in Palmerston North, and was Medical Superintendent at the Palmerston North Hospital.
