CAFE CHANTANT.

THE-CONCLUDING SCENES

NET PROCEEDS £1400

The Cafo Chantant and Fancy Fair was brought to a close last evening, in the presence of a very large number of the Ashburton public. Keen interest was taken in the fun right up to the closing hour. The programme, was considerably curtailed in order to give the stallholders an opportunity to sell off as much, of their remaining stocks as possible,-and also to give the public an opportunity to make their iinal investments in art union tickets, otc. At 9.30 Mr W. Smith, of the Farmers' Co-oporative Association's auctioneering staff, opened ' the auction sale ox the stalls, and all the structures were disposed ,of as they stood, .at j satisfactory' prices: Surplus stocks iri hand "were then put up for auction, and 'bidding was spirited: Many perhons who had waited until a late hour in order to secure bargains were not -disappointed, and practically the whole of the stock was cleared.

At the conclusion of the salo Mr W. Anderson thanked sill the lady workers for' the enthusiasm they had shown, and i'or the able way in which they Iwid worked throughout. He considered 'that it was entirely due to the untiring efforts of the ladies that the fair had proved such a financial success. He also paid a tribute,to the work accomplished by Mrs E. Crisp, who flhd- designed the French village, and who had been a consistent and Tjiluabie worker throughout. At the request of Mr Anderson, cheers were' given for the ladios.

It is estimated that the net takings 'for the fair will amount to £1400., Tjasfc evening the proceeds totalled £200, which included amounis received «from the auction &ale.
