Duncan Gordon McKay, Methven, was the only recruit to be accepted for active service at the Ashburton Defence Office to-day. One man was unable to pass the medical test.
The Borough Council workmen , are now engaged in connecting the cemetery with the high-pressure water supply. The supply for the cemetery had previously been drawn from a well.
The sum of £2.5s has been added t 0 the "Guardian" Fund for Christmas Gifts for Soldiers, as a result of a Christmas tree and lollie stall conducted at the residence of Mrs J. Moore, by Miss Molly Moore, Mavis Muir, and Kathleen Thomas.
- A farmer from the Longbeach '.disT trict states that the crops in that part of the County have not come, on as we'll as was expected, owing to the prevailing cold winds. The set-back appears to be only, of a temporary nature, however, and it*is hoped that with' the advent,of warmer weather they will come on well again. t
Speaking to a "Guardian"! reporter yesterday, Mr W. Morgan, of Methven, said he did not think the farmers in that district were reducing thoir cropping area's to any great extent • this season. There had been considerable talk about the possible shortage of labour for harvesting, and the apprehensions in this connection were certainly warranted. " You will find, however," said Mr Morgan, " that the area under crop will not be' much below normal!'' ■ ■ . ' >
Elections are being held at Tinwald and Hampstead to-day for representatives for members of the Town Boards in each district.. At -Hampetead the ratepayers arejjalso being asked to decide whether a loan of £7000 will be raised to carry out a channelling scheme. The election of a representative for the Hospital Board for the combined districts of Hampstead and Tinwald is also being held. , Up to noon the polling in each locality was slow, but this afternoon, particularly in Hampstead, considerable interest was taken in the elections. A number of motor-cars were requisitioned by candidates -to. carry voters to the booths.
Lieutenant E. J. Eraser, of the 16th (Waikato) Regiment, ship's adjutant on troopship No. 61, writes'as follows to the Editor of the" "Guardian": —
"Sir, —The voyages, of the, various Reinforcements that hare left the Dominion have been made enjoyable by the generosity of many public-spirited citizons, public bodies, etc., in donating comforts for the soldiers. Tie members of the Sixteenth Reinforcements on his Majesty's New' Zealand Troopship No. 61 received many gifta, including books, periodicals, fruit, cakes, and musical instruments, all'of which, needless to . say, have been , greatly appreciated by the men.. Captain Cade (Officer Commanding - Troops) wishes me, on behalf of himself, officers, n.c.o.'s, and men, to thank' all those who so generously contributed."

A correspondent has .■forwarded';to the "Guardian" a strongly-worded protest against "the eontinuanca of the menace to' public healtb-r-to wit, the drinking fountain opposite the Courthouse.'' Ho cites.the case of a nursegirl whooling a. perambulator, in which was a child about a year old, alongside the fountain, and giving the. infant a drink of wafcor from the metal, cup, which had just been "used by "a frowsylooking tramp."
