REFERENDUM CAMPAIGN
OPENED
(Received Septombor 19. 11.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, September 19.
In opening the referendum campaign, Mr Hughes said the Government did not.consider it would ho necessary to draw married men into -compiilsory service, aa the sapply of .single men would suffice. Only nons would ho oxempted. Cml tribunals would be established to hwir applications' for exemption. Refuting tho statement
that pay would be "reduced, he said the only alteration would be to increase the maximum of married men's separation allowance from 8s to 10s.
At the conclusion of the meeting it was resolved by 4000 votes to seven, " That the meeting form a National Committee to organise a campaign to secure an affirmative veto in the referendum."
Street meetings were ,held round the Town Hall, the speakers denouncing conscription.
I The meeting was the largest ever held in Sydney., thousands being unable to gain admission. The rousing and passionate appeals to duty \and national honour made by Mr Hughes, the Lord Mayor, Mr Cook, Mr Holman, and other leaders, evoked a remarkable demonstration of enthusiasm.
