An official report from Egypt states

A mobile column composed of Anzac mounted troops, artilleiy, and a camel corps'left Ber-el-Abd on September 6, with a view of making a reconnaissance upon the enemy westward of El Arish. The column reached the Turkish position, at Bir-el-Mazar at dawn on September 17. After a sharp engagement, we penetrated the enemy's trenches at several points and,inflicted considerable casualties, -while our artillery shelled the camps. The attack apparently .surprised the. Our aircraft fired on several parties, including German officers, who were rapidly riding.back to El Arish.
