A SOLDIER FINED.
DUNEDIN, Sept. 15
For taking liquor into the military barracks at Quarantine Island, Private E. Snowman was fined £5 and costs. The defendant was given leave to go to Port Chalmers to visit a dentist, but instead of getting off the steamer at Quarantine Island he went on to Portobello. On his return his handbag was searched and found to contain two bottles of whisky and one of rum. The defendant in the witness box made a very voluable and astonishing statement, which the Defenco authorities denied, concerning free introducing of intoxicants 1 into this sick camp.
