[per press association.]
Auckland, February 23. The ftnnual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-day, when the! president Mr Adam Porter, delivered a long address, in the course of which he said that the volume of business in Auckland had during the past year been largjr and sounder than for a long time. Money was plentiful for all legitimate enterprise. There was more money in the colony than the demands of trade and commerce appeared to be able to absorb. The returns showed that a greater number of people were making homes in the Auckland district than in any other part of the colony, while in imports Auckland was the first port in the colony, and was not far behind in exports. He spoke with approval of the completion of the Rotqrua Railway. He regretted that no attempt had been made to test the deep level reefe on the Thames goldfield, and mentioned the necessity for settling the native lands. In their report the council of the, Chamber expressed gratification that Lord Onslow was taking steps to insist upon the branding of imported produce to England. Mr Porter was re-elected president.
