AtroKLANi 1, February 24. A gale, accompanied by heavy rain, veering east to north west, prevailed last night. A good deal of damage wis done to small craft. Reports from Knipara and Waikato speak of excepcionally heavy weather in these districts.

New Plymouth, February 24. A furious gale from the south-e^st has been blowing since midnight, accompanied with heavy rainfall. The gale has. done a good deal »f damage to fencing, chimneys and trees, and Shuttleworth'a windmill has been pastially wrecked. The wind is now (11 a.m.) abating, but it is still raining, arid the races" have been postponed till to morrow.

Wbliington, February 24. Mr Schnadhorst, organiser of the English Liberal party, ie now on a visit with his family to the colony. He had a long interview with Mr Seddnn. He seems greatly pleased with what he has seen of the colony. The Governor will remain in Wellington sometime in anticipation of a visit from Archduke Froderick of Austria, who is on the way to the colonies.

The total area of Crown lands disposed of since April 1 is 94,872 acres. X<tkl»or Matter*., Mr Tregear, head of the Labor ■Department, who has been visiting the north, speaks well of the condition < f things, -which have improved .since last year. The only place in the colony where there appear to be unemployed at present is at Westporbf and Mr Lomax visits ifc next week to Bee what can be done. Mr Tregear found a feeling at Auckland in favor of the compulsory closing of shops, large and small, on the weekly half-holi-day. An Explanation, Mr Cadman explains that in his feerence in his Thames tpaech to the more profitable employment of prisoneis he did not allude to generally recognised public worka, bub to such avenues of labor as treeplanting 6n wastes, like the Kaingaroa plains in the pumice country, straightening sharp curves on railway lines, etc. Weaflier.
