February 23. Mrs Tancred, widow of the late Chancellor of the University, has given £50 towards the central relief fund, which today amounted to £269. It has been resolved to hold a public demonstration on Thursday, March 9, in Lancaster Park. The schools and friendly societies will be invited to assist in forming a procession. An active canvass is being made in the city and Lyttelton. It is proposed to hold a benefit regatta at Rhodes' Bay, when the railway and steamboats will allow liberal commission on fares. The proposal has been favorably received by the regatta commitcee, who ! recommend that the races consist of stump outrigger events, and a sailing com- | petition.
