HELP FOR QUEENSLAND.
Ashbubton, as usual, is responding very heartily to the cry of distress, which comes to v*, this time, from our Queensland fellow-colonisls, and there is every reason to believe that the resultof thevariousefforts now being put forth will be the gathering together of a very considerable amount of contributions in money and necessaries such as wheat, flour, etc. The Church collections, Promenade Concert, the Cycling Club meeting, besides the subscription lists, will all help to swell the total, but there is yet another suggestion made, just after the close of the recent public meeting, which might be given effect to. This is that contributions of all kinds of saleable articles should be invited to be sent in to some recognised piece on or before the morning of Saturday next and sold during the day at a stall to be established in the Arcade for that purpose, the idea is a good one j many uriconsidered trifles might be easily spared from the households of our town and country residents, all of which would sell for something, however small the sum, and many a farmer's wife would | be glad to bring in a couple or two of poultry which the townsfolk would readily buy at the stall for the Sunday's dinner. The scheme is one which could be easily carried out, and ( the Committee might very well arrange to put it in operation.
