Licensing Questions.
i'ER PKKSS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, February 21. At a meeting; of the Prohibition League to-night, the Chairman said that, iv view of the decision of the Court of Appeal relative to the-Sydenham Licensing Committee, it was necessary that steps .should be taken for placing the direct veto on the drink traffic in the hands of the people. He mentioned that the league now possessed 2i2 members. Mrs Lodge, of Syderham, suggested that a public meet' ing to discuss the question be called, and wi men asked to address the meeting. Resolutions were passed as follows :— (1) Favouring the female franchise ; (2) that cards ba forwarded to members of the league, urging them to induce others to join ; (3) that members of the league be' requested not to vote for any candidate for Parliament who will not pledge hinself to give the direct veto of the drink traffic without compensation ; (3) conveying thanks to the Rev Mr Jsitt foi his services to ward « the suppression of the evil of intemperance ; (5) that the executive be recommended to send delegates to the various temperance bodies, with a view of securing concerted action in the matter. A member mentioned that a deputation would shortly wait on the Minister of Justice to urge the suppression of Sunday traffic indulged in by Chinese and publicans. . Dunbdin, February 21. At a meeting of the Licensed Victualers' Associafcian it was decided to prosecute the appenl in die Rcsyln licensing case, the cost to be borne by the association, Wellington, February 22. A deputation is about to w<ub on the Minister of Justice to urge that steps ba taken to put down Sunday trading by Chinese ana publicans.
