Auckland, February 21. With reference to the claim of the men who obtained judgment for wages from Bennett, a contractor, for works on the Great North Road, Bennett has written ti the Newcon Borough Council, abandoning the contract and asking that the men should be paid their wages from the moneys accruing fo him, and now in the hands of the council. A well known resident of Whangarei, Mr E- Cafler, who arrived in the colony in 1840, landing at the Bay of Islands, i«s dead. Mr Ofler was born in France. He was one of the ambulance branch of the French army at the battle of Waterloo. In the early days of rhe cplqny he purchased land at. Akaroa, Canterbury, from the natives. He was ninety-seven years of age. /* nothor letter has been addressed by Mr W. L. Five additional informations have been sworn in the alleged dumwyiam cases. Four informations are against Richard Owen Wendy, of Hawera, a farmer, for false declarations under the Land Act, and one against J. F. Rea-\ of Hawera, butcher, for a similar offence. The informations will be heard on Tuesday next at New Plymouth. A number of other
