THE APPOINTMENT OF GOVERNOR.
Sydney, February 19. £ir G. R. Dibbs states that he claimed no right respecting the appointment of Governor, but expected to be informed of the selection before the final appointment in order that he might inform the Secretary of State for thtt Colonies whether the appointment would give satisfaction. February 20. The Premier, Mr Dibbs, has cabled to the Marquis of Ripon, Secretary of State for the Colonies, hoping that the name of the proposed governor of New South Wales will be submitted to the Government before a final selection is made. LABOR ITEMS. Sydney, February 20. The miners in the metropolitan colliery, Clifton, have struck against a reduction in the hewing rates. POLITICAL. Premier Dibbs has announced that he will cot appeal to the country until the measures now before Parliament are.dealt with. GOLD DISCOVERY. A rich gold reef has been discovered near Gundagai, on the Murrumbidgee. A piece of quartz eleven ounces weight yielded six ounces of pure gold. SHIPPING CASUALTIES. The captain of the Auckland trader Jessie, wrecked at Long Island, has arrived here. He reports they had to land through a terrible surf. The vortex of the cyclone approaching the vessel rendered this course necessary in order to save life. The jetty was demolished, and a number of houses completely blown away. The barquentine Blaster, bound for Port Chalmers, went ashore,in the gale at Woolgoolga. The crew are safe. AQUATICS. Stanbury, the champion sculler of the world, who visits America, will endeavour to arrange a series of matches. He is a passenger by the Alameda.
