The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1893. BIS DAT QUI CITO DAT.

It has been decided to hold the harvest thanksgiving services in St Stephen's Church to-morrow. Rather short notice has been given, but, in visw of the appalling disaster in Queens'and, the incumbent and Church officers, strongly impressed with the urgent and pressing needs of the unfortunate sufferers, desire to give a special opportunity for expression of practical sympathy.* Believing in the maxim " Bis dat gui cito dat," (he who gives at once doubles his gift), and that help must be prompt to be really effective, we are sure that farmers who may be unable to attend the festival will readily excuse the short notice. The services will come very fittingly immediately after the Flower Show, the lessons which maybe derived from fruits and flowers being vividly illustrated and impressed by Nature's object lesson. Not only so for this circumstance, but it will only be right that whilst rejoicing in the plentiful yield and the safe ingathering of the fruits of the earth, gratitude to Almighty God might well take the form of Christian charity to those in want and suffering; pouring in the oil and wine of sympathy and love with wounded humanity. It is hoped that a supreme effort will be made by the congregation! Blank cheques will be provided in the vestry for use if required, and the Churchwardens will keep the amount for a few days in order to add any sums forwarded.
